Istanbul Toilet Unclogging

For toilet unclogging, Cantley works without lifting your toilet off its base and without touching your bathroom tiles. We use snake heads that do not scratch the porcelain, and a camera and high-pressure water jetting when needed. When the water rises in the bowl and you are afraid to flush again, a plunger is often not enough, especially if the blockage has gone past the bend of the toilet and reached the connection in the wall or the building's shared stack. Whether you searched for unblocking a toilet, clearing a toilet bowl or opening a toilet drain, the team comes to your address, finds where the water is stopping and fixes the problem while explaining it to you.

In apartment buildings, a blocked toilet is often no longer the problem of a single flat. Waste from the upper floors collects in the shared stack, and the backed-up water shows up in the lowest flat: water comes back up through the ground-floor toilet even though nobody in that flat has flushed anything wrong. In these cases we go in through the stack's cleaning hatch or the manhole in the basement and clear the stack from top to bottom. We also pass camera footage showing the level of the blockage to building and site management. Whether the request comes from a home or from the shared toilet of a business, the method is applied with the same care.

Signs that show whether the problem is in the toilet or the stack

The symptoms largely reveal where the blockage is and which method will be needed.

  • Water drains slowly

If the water rises in the bowl when you flush and takes a long time to go down, the blockage is usually in the toilet's own bend or in the connection right behind it. A wad of paper, wet wipes or sanitary pads catch in this narrow bend and pack in a little more with every use.

  • Water does not drain at all

If the water level in the bowl never drops and the plunger gets no result, the line is completely blocked. At this point, flushing again and again will cause an overflow. Hard objects such as a toy or a toothbrush that has fallen into the bowl often cause this.

  • Water rises in the shower

If water rises from the shower drain or the bathroom floor drain when you flush, the blockage is beyond the toilet, in the line where the bathroom drains join. Working inside the bowl does not help here; the shared line needs to be cleared with a snake or a robotic head.

  • Dirty water in a lower flat

If dirty water appears in your toilet or floor drain even though you have not used the toilet, the problem is in the building's shared stack. Waste from the upper floors cannot go down and finds the lowest outlet. This calls for clearing the stack together with building management.

  • Water rising and falling in the bowl

Air bubbles coming out of the toilet, the water level rising and falling on its own, or a strong sewer smell in the bathroom show that the stack or the vent pipe is narrowing. Even if there is no overflow yet, these signs warn that a blockage is on its way.

Why toilets and toilet drains get blocked

Toilets hold back odour thanks to the S-shaped bend inside them, but this bend is also the point where blockages happen most. Toilet paper is made to break up in water. Wet wipes, cotton pads, sanitary pads, nappies, cotton buds and cat litter do not. They cling together in the bend and form a tight plug. We often see that wipes labelled as flushable also catch easily in this bend and make the plug bigger.

In apartment buildings, the second major cause is the shared stack. The toilet on every floor connects to the same vertical pipe, and this pipe reaches the manhole through a horizontal line in the basement. If the slope in the horizontal section is shallow or sediment has built up at a bend, waste coming from the upper floors slows down here and piles up. As the blockage grows, water comes back through the toilet or floor drain of the lowest flat. That is why residents of the ground and first floors are usually the first to notice the problem.

The third cause is the plumbing itself. A slipped sleeve where the toilet connects to the wall or floor, old cast iron pipes narrowed inside by rust and limescale, or a line laid at the wrong slope make blockages come back again and again. A phone or a child's toy dropped into the pipe can also block the toilet completely. In cases like these, any work done without camera footage is guesswork and can push the problem further down the line.

Steps for unclogging a toilet without removing it

The porcelain of a toilet is delicate, so we start with the gentlest method and move to powerful machines only when necessary.

  1. Seeing the situation on site

The team first tries the flush carefully once and looks at how the water behaves and whether the other drains in the bathroom are affected. This shows whether the blockage is in the toilet, in the bathroom line or in the building's stack. What will be done is explained to you and your approval is taken.

  2. Clearing with a protected snake

A toilet auger with a sheathed tip that does not scratch the porcelain is fed into the bend of the toilet. The snake breaks up the mass of paper and wipes, or winds it around itself and pulls it out. If a hard object is stuck, a suitable tip is chosen to shift it and bring it back, and no part is forced.

  3. Stack and main line

If the blockage is beyond the toilet, the team goes in through the stack's cleaning hatch or the manhole in the basement. A motorised drain snake and a robotic head break up the build-up at the bend where the stack turns into the horizontal line. On long lines, the pipe is flushed along its length with high-pressure water, and the waste is carried on to the manhole.

  4. Flow and camera check

The flow is tested by flushing a few times. If the problem has come back before, or a suspicious point was seen in the stack, the inside of the pipe is inspected with a camera and the footage is shown to you. If needed, measures such as fitting a backflow valve, which stops dirty water returning to the lower flats, are discussed.

What to do in the toilet while the team is on the way

  • Do not flush again and again; if the water has come close to the rim of the bowl, every flush means an overflow.
  • Close the isolation valve under the cistern so that no new water fills the bowl even if it is flushed by accident.
  • Do not pour boiling water or chemical drain opener into the toilet; the porcelain can crack, and the chemical can splash onto you and the team during the work.
  • If you live in an apartment building, tell your neighbours upstairs and the management so that they use the toilet and bathroom less for a while.
  • Lay old towels or cloths around the toilet and lift the mat in front of the bathroom door.

Frequently asked questions

Does the toilet have to be removed for toilet unclogging?

In most cases it does not. The bend of the toilet and the connection behind it are cleared with snake heads that do not damage the porcelain, without moving the toilet from its place. Removing the toilet comes up only if a hard object stuck inside will not come out with the snake, or if the connecting sleeve is faulty. This job needs care for the seal and is done by the team.

Can I pour chemical drain opener into the toilet?

It is not recommended. Chemical drain openers do not dissolve the things that block toilets most often, such as wipes, pads or hard objects, but they can damage the glaze of the porcelain, the seals and the PVC connections. When the water does not go down, the chemical sits in the bowl, and every job done afterwards carries a risk of splashes and burns. If you have already poured some in, be sure to tell the team the name of the product.

Why does water come up through the toilet on a lower floor in an apartment building?

The cause is usually a blockage in the lower part of the building's stack or in the horizontal line in the basement. When waste from the upper floors cannot go down, it finds the lowest outlet, which is the toilet or floor drain on the lower floor. This problem cannot be solved from inside the flat; the line is cleared by going in through the stack's cleaning hatch or the manhole, and management is informed.

Can a wet wipe block a toilet?

Yes, it can. A wet wipe does not break up in water like toilet paper; it joins with other waste in the bend of the toilet or in the bends of the stack and forms a tight plug. Wipes sold as flushable also do not dissolve fast enough inside the pipe. The simplest precaution is to keep a bin with a lid in the bathroom for wipes, pads and cotton.

How is a phone or toy that has fallen into the toilet retrieved?

It is taken back out of the bend of the toilet with a snake with a suitable tip or a retriever, and for this it is important not to flush at all. As long as the object is sitting in the bend, it can be removed without taking the toilet off. If the toilet was flushed and the object has moved on to the connection in the wall, its location is found with the camera, and rarely the toilet may need to be removed.

Is toilet unclogging also done at night?

Yes, the team works 24/7 and comes to your address for a toilet overflowing at night or a building stack blocked during a holiday. Service covers all 39 districts of Istanbul. When you call, briefly describing where the water is stopping and whether the lower flats are affected helps the team arrive with the right equipment.
