Istanbul PVC Drain Pipe Unclogging
In PVC drain pipe unclogging, Cantley clears the blocked PVC drain pipe in your home or building without scratching or cracking the pipe and without disturbing the joints. "Pimaş" is the everyday Turkish word for plastic drain pipe, and in almost all newly built buildings the kitchen, bathroom and shared stack lines are made of it. It is light and easy to install, but it is far more delicate than metal pipe and is easily damaged by the wrong tool. Working with the right technique on PVC pipes prevents both today's blockage and a leak that could appear tomorrow.
The problem we meet most often when clearing blocked pipes is not the blockage itself, but the damage left by an attempt made long before we arrive. PVC pipes that have been poked with a stiff wire hanger, flushed with boiling water or softened by a strong chemical can need a bigger repair than the original blockage. That is why our team first checks the pipe's diameter, age and the condition of its joints, then chooses the tool and the pressure to suit. Our aim is to clear the blockage without shortening the pipe's life and to bring the line close to its original flow. We explain it to you step by step.
What you see when your PVC drain pipe is blocked
PVC pipes usually run inside the wall or above a suspended ceiling, so the blockage is not visible from outside. The signs below often show that the problem is in the pipe itself.
Leaking or dripping at the joints
When water cannot move through a blocked PVC pipe, pressure builds up backwards and shows itself at the weakest point, the gasketed joints. If you see a damp stain on the ceiling below or wetness inside a cabinet, the pipe may be blocked ahead of that point.
Water noise coming from inside the wall
If you hear a long gurgling or bubbling sound inside the wall after water is used on the floor above, the PVC pipe in the shared stack has narrowed. Water collects above the blockage and trickles through slowly, and the sound carries on for minutes.
Swelling or discolouration on the plastic pipe
If the PVC pipe visible under the sink has turned white, swollen or slightly bent, it has most likely been exposed to boiling water or chemicals before. That section is more prone to both blockage and cracking.
Drains on a shared pipe slow down together
If the sink, shower and washing machine outlet connected to the same horizontal PVC pipe all slow down together, the problem is not in the traps but in the pipe section that collects them. These pipes usually run under the floor and need a machine to be cleared without breaking anything.
Why do PVC pipes get blocked?
The inner surface of PVC pipe is smooth, and in a new pipe waste slides through easily. The problem starts with how the pipe was laid. If horizontal runs were not given enough slope, water flows slowly and the grease, hair and debris it carries settle at the bottom of the pipe. On lines with right-angle bends and more joints than necessary, waste also catches a little more at every turn. At the foot of stacks with many bends, this build-up grows especially fast and affects the lower floors.
The second major cause is temperature. PVC pipes are durable only up to a certain temperature. When boiling water or very hot oil is poured in all the time, the pipe softens, the joints loosen and the inner surface becomes wavy. That wavy surface is an ideal place for grease and sediment to cling to, and blockages become more frequent. Even one pour of boiling water can loosen the joints, so warm water is enough.
Chemical drain openers have the same effect. Products containing strong acid or alkali stay in the pipe if they fail to dissolve the blockage, and they wear down the PVC, the gaskets and the glued joints. On top of that, building waste left over from renovations, such as plaster, cement and tile grout, hardens in PVC lines and causes permanent blockages. Because this waste does not dissolve in water, no home method can loosen it and a machine is needed.

Our method for clearing PVC without damaging it
With PVC pipe, the aim is to break up the blockage without touching the inner surface or the joints. At every step we adjust the tool to the condition of the pipe.
We establish the pipe's diameter and condition
We examine the pipe's diameter, direction of run and joints from the places we can see. We ask whether chemicals or boiling water have been used before. This information decides which snake head and how much water pressure we use, and on an old or softened pipe we work more gently.
We use the snake with a suitable head
We use the motorised drain snake with a head that suits the pipe diameter and has no sharp edge. Keeping the machine's rotation speed low, we break up the blockage, and where we feel resistance as we advance we stop and assess the situation. This way the snake does not scratch the inner surface of the PVC or strain the pipe at the bends. If needed, we change the head during the job.
We wash out grease and sediment at adjusted pressure
After the snake, we clean the grease and sediment left on the pipe wall with high-pressure water jetting. We set the pressure to suit PVC pipe and use a rotating-head nozzle to create an even curtain of water across the wall. This way the line is not just punched through, it is cleaned from end to end.
We check the pipe's condition with a camera
At the end of the job we send the camera into the line and inspect the cleaned pipe. If there is a crack, a broken joint or a collapsed section, we show it to you on screen. If only the damaged section needs replacing, we limit the PVC replacement to that point. We do not touch sound pipe.
To protect the pipe until the team arrives
- Do not pour boiling water into a blocked PVC pipe. Warm tap water does no harm, but boiling water loosens the joints.
- Do not use a chemical drain opener. If you already have, note the product name and when you poured it.
- Do not poke the pipe with a wire hanger or a stiff rod. You will scratch the inner surface of the plastic and push the blockage further in.
- Place a bucket or cloth under any joint you see leaking, and do not use the drains connected to that line.

Frequently asked questions
How do you unclog a blocked PVC drain pipe?
A blocked PVC drain pipe is cleared without breaking anything, using a drain snake suited to the pipe diameter and water at adjusted pressure. First the position of the blockage is found, then the snake breaks it up, and the water cleans the grease and sediment from the pipe wall. Using stiff wire or chemicals at home is not recommended because they can damage the PVC.
Can the PVC pipe be damaged when clearing a blocked pipe?
Not when the work is done with the right tool and pressure. Damage usually comes from stiff wire hangers, sharp-tipped tools, boiling water or strong chemicals. We adjust the head, the machine speed and the water pressure to the pipe's diameter and age, and we check with a camera at the end of the job.
Can you pour boiling water into PVC drain pipe?
No, boiling water should not be poured into PVC drain pipe. PVC pipes soften at high temperature, the joints and gaskets loosen, and the inner surface becomes wavy. For a light grease build-up, warm or hot tap water is enough. On a fully blocked pipe, hot water does not help either and a machine is needed.
Does the PVC pipe need unclogging or replacing?
In most cases unclogging is enough. Replacement is needed only if the pipe has cracked, broken or collapsed. We find this out with a camera, not by guessing. If the footage shows damage, we replace only that section and leave the sound pipe in place, so no unnecessary breaking or demolition is done. If replacement is needed, we first show you the footage and get your approval.
Can PVC pipe inside a wall be cleared without breaking it open?
Yes. PVC pipes inside walls and floors are cleared by entering through existing drain openings, removed traps or cleaning access covers. The snake and the camera travel on a flexible cable, so they can pass through bends. The wall is touched only if the pipe itself is damaged and this has been confirmed on camera. This way your bathroom tiles and kitchen worktop stay in place.
