Üsküdar is one of Istanbul's oldest settlements, and that history shows in the pipes under its buildings. Neighbourhoods such as Kuzguncuk, Çengelköy and Beylerbeyi have restored wooden houses and older masonry buildings, while new office buildings and homes are rising around Altunizade. In the older buildings of Üsküdar's historic neighbourhoods, wastewater often reaches the street through clay or cast iron pipes. Over the years these pipes crack, slip at the joints or become rough on the inside. Roots that enter through cracks and sediment that builds up at the joints cut off the flow. In restored houses the plumbing inside the flat has often been renewed, but the building's old connection to the street has been left in place. That is why the blockage often appears not inside the house but in that old section running under the garden or courtyard. We film this section with the camera and show you how far the damage goes.

On Üsküdar's steep, narrow streets, many buildings cannot be reached by vehicle, and some addresses are reached only along stepped lanes. That is why we keep our equipment portable. In shoreline neighbourhoods such as Kandilli and Çengelköy, some buildings sit close to sea level and the fall of the line is limited: water flows slowly and sediment settles easily. Cafés and restaurants on the waterfront also put extra load on shared lines at busy weekends. In the newer buildings around Altunizade, problems come mostly from heavy use and from the wrong waste going into floor lines. In these buildings we also test the drains connected to the floor line one by one to find out which flat is loading the line.
