In a shop on the main street, water seeping into the basement storeroom must be pumped out before it reaches the stock, and waiting only makes the damage worse. The old masonry buildings in Cihangir, Galata and Tarlabaşı have been divided over time and turned into hotels or rental flats, so their plumbing has grown through many additions. Each new bathroom and kitchen was connected to the old cast iron stacks at different angles, and the fall is often too shallow.
