In Mimarsinan, Kumburgaz and Güzelce, most detached houses with gardens are now lived in all year round, but their drains were still laid for summer use. Soil, leaves and bits of root can build up in the shared line running under the garden. When the line is barely used over winter, the sediment hardens, and when everyone uses water at once in early summer, the water backs up. The washing machines and dishwashers added to these homes later put even more strain on the old, narrow pipe.

The cause of a blockage differs between the older houses on the lake side and the newer blocks further inland. In low-lying houses, when the street line fills up during a downpour, dirty water can rise through the drains, and in that case unclogging alone is not enough. For site management, scanning the whole line with a camera helps you see the problem points and avoids dealing with the same fault every summer. In cafes and restaurants, grease build-up moves much faster than in homes.
