Beşiktaş is a district on the European side of the Bosphorus where historic buildings and modern business centres sit side by side. In Ortaköy and Bebek there are steep streets running down to the shore, yalı mansions and stone or timber buildings more than a hundred years old. In these buildings, PVC drain pipe sections added over time next to cast iron and clay pipes create different diameters and sharp bends. Blockages most often start at these transition points. In buildings close to sea level the pipes run almost flat, so solids linger on the way; in buildings on the slope, the load from the buildings above falls on the connections in the street below. The Beşiktaş market area and its surroundings are full of cafes, taverns and restaurants that students and office workers fill all day. In the narrow streets, the kitchen drains of these side-by-side businesses clog quickly with grease and food waste. In Etiler and Levent, flats, residences and office towers dominate, so shared stacks and heavily used office kitchens come to the fore. Because it is often impossible to bring a large vehicle up to a building in narrow streets, we work with portable machines. That way we do not tie up the street traffic or the neighbouring businesses unnecessarily. In streets with many student flats, bathroom and kitchen drains clog often because so many people use them. In these flats, cleaning the trap and a short run with the drain snake is often enough.
