# Istanbul PVC Drain Pipe Replacement

Source: https://cantleyvidanjoraltyapi.com/en/pvc-pipe-replacement/

When it comes to PVC drain pipe replacement, Cantley removes the cracked, leaking, sagging or wrongly sloped PVC drain pipes in your home or business and fits new ones in their place. These pipes connect your bathroom, kitchen, balcony and toilet drains to the building's shared stack, and because they sit out of sight, the problem is often noticed only when water starts dripping into the flat below. Old pipes that keep blocking because their bore has narrowed are part of the job too. In shops and restaurants, drain pipes running through the ceiling are renewed with the same care.

Before replacing anything, we look inside with a camera and find which section is at fault. That way we renew only the faulty part rather than the whole installation, and we avoid unnecessary breaking. If the pipe is exposed in a suspended ceiling, behind a cupboard or in a basement, the work can often be done without breaking anything. If it runs inside a wall or floor, we open only that one spot. We come to homes, shops, restaurants and workplaces in all 39 districts of Istanbul, 24/7. The new pipe is fitted with a slope that lets water run freely and with secure clamps. Your neighbour downstairs will also sleep easier.

## Signs that a PVC drain pipe needs replacing

You usually notice a failing PVC drain pipe somewhere else: on the ceiling of the flat below, inside a cupboard, or in a blockage that keeps coming back.

### Stain or dripping on the ceiling downstairs

A yellowing stain on the bathroom ceiling of the flat below, bubbling paint, or dripping that starts while you shower all point to a leak in the drain pipe or its joint upstairs. The longer the leak continues, the more the ceiling plaster and suspended ceiling suffer.

### Dampness in the sink or basin cabinet

If the floor of the cabinet under the worktop is constantly damp, water may be escaping from the trap outlet or from the PVC joint leading to the wall. A cracked pipe lets a little water out with every use, and the cabinet floor swells and rots over time. A leak caught early causes less damage.

### The same drain slowing down again and again

If the same sink or shower runs slowly again soon after being cleared, the pipe may have been laid at the wrong slope or may sag at one point. Sediment builds up in the section where the water sits, so the blockage always starts in the same place.

### Pipe sagging from the ceiling

PVC pipes running along the ceiling of a shop, restaurant or basement sag in the middle once their clamps loosen. Water collects in the sagging section, the joints come under strain, and over time leaks start at the joints. This is also easy to see just by looking at it.

### Old, thin-walled pipes

Thin-walled pipes used in older buildings harden and turn brittle with hot water and age. Even a light knock, or some work done during cleaning, can crack them.

## Why do PVC drain pipes crack and leak?

PVC drain pipes are durable, but their life is not unlimited. The most common problem is at the joints: the seals inside the sockets that connect the pipes harden over time and stop sealing. If the pipe was not pushed in far enough during installation, or the seal slipped out of place, the joint is weak from day one. These leaks start small, but with every use a little more water seeps into the wall or ceiling. By the time you notice, moisture may have built up inside the wall.

Heat and chemicals also wear a pipe down. Boiling water poured down a sink softens PVC and loosens the joints. Chemical drain openers generate heat inside the pipe, eat away the inner surface and damage the seals. Hot water from dishwashers and washing machines can also deform pipes over time, especially older thin-walled ones. That is why pipes treated often with openers fail sooner. The drain connections of machines that use hot water should be checked regularly for the same reason.

Poor installation is the most hidden cause. A pipe connected with too little slope, or sloping the wrong way, holds water instead of carrying it, and sediment and grease build up inside. Pipes with wide gaps between clamps sag over time and form a pocket of water in the middle. Clearing such a pipe gives short relief, but the blockage returns until the slope is corrected. The lasting fix is to relay that section at the right slope. That is why we pay particular attention to slope and clamp spacing when we replace a pipe.

## How do we replace a PVC drain pipe?

Our aim is to locate the faulty section correctly, replace only that section, and make sure the new pipe drains freely.

1. **Finding the faulty section with a camera**: First we look for the source of the leak or blockage. The camera is sent in from the drain into the pipe, and a crack, separated joint, sag or slope error shows up on the screen. We show you what we find, and together we decide which section will be replaced and whether anywhere needs to be opened up.
2. **Removing the old pipe**: If we need to reach the pipe, only the marked spot is opened. On exposed runs such as a suspended ceiling, behind a cupboard or in a basement, no breaking is needed. The work area is protected with covers. The faulty pipe and joints are removed carefully, and the ends of the sound pipe that remains are cleaned and prepared for the new connection.
3. **Fitting the new PVC pipe at the right slope**: We use new PVC pipe and fittings that match the existing diameter. The pipe is laid at a slope that lets water and sediment flow by themselves, the sealed joints are seated fully, and the pipe is clamped at the required intervals. The point where it joins the shared stack or main line is connected so that it does not leak.
4. **Water test and tidying up**: Water is run from all the drains connected to the new pipe, the joints are checked for leaks, and the flow is watched. If needed, the camera is sent in again. The work area is cleaned, the opened spot is left ready to be closed up, and we show you the finished work on site. We also share some tips on use.

## How can you limit the leak until the team arrives?

- Stop using the sink, shower or machine connected to the leaking pipe. Every use puts more water into the wall and ceiling.
- Put a bucket under the dripping spot, take the items out of the cabinet and dry the floor of it with a dry cloth.
- Let your neighbour downstairs know. If the ceiling is wet, ask them not to use the light fitting beneath it.
- Wrapping tape over the crack can slow the leak a little. Keep in mind that it is only a temporary measure and tell the team about it.
- Do not pour boiling water or chemical opener down the drain. On a cracked PVC pipe, this makes the damage worse.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do you have to break the wall to replace a PVC drain pipe?

Not always. If the pipe runs exposed in a suspended ceiling, behind a cupboard or in a basement, it is replaced without breaking anything. If the pipe is inside a wall or floor, we open only as much as needed at the faulty spot found with the camera. Instead of breaking up the whole bathroom, we target the problem section, and we show you the spot to be opened beforehand.

### Can a cracked PVC drain pipe be repaired, or does it need replacing?

A cracked PVC pipe usually cannot be repaired for good, and that section needs replacing. Tape, silicone or adhesive may slow the leak for a short time, but the crack opens again because the pipe heats up and cools down with every use. If the leak is only at a joint, sometimes renewing the seal and reseating the joint is enough.

### Why does the slope of a PVC drain pipe matter?

Slope lets waste water and the sediment in it flow through the pipe without waiting. If the slope is too shallow, the water runs slowly and sediment settles at the bottom. If the pipe slopes the wrong way, water stays in one section all the time. In both cases the blockage keeps returning at the same spot. When fitting the new pipe, we measure the slope as we lay it and place the clamps at the right intervals so it does not sag.

### Should an old PVC drain pipe that keeps blocking be replaced?

If the blockage comes back soon after every clearing, most often yes. We first look with the camera and work out whether the problem is in the pipe or in how it is used. If the inside of the pipe is rough, sagging or at the wrong slope, clearing it only helps for a while and replacement makes more sense. If the pipe is sound, cleaning and tips on use may be enough.

### Who is responsible for a problem in the building's shared stack?

The shared stack that all floors connect to is generally the responsibility of the building management. The pipes that connect a flat's own drains to the stack belong to the flat owner. A camera inspection shows clearly which side the leak is on, which makes it easier to settle the question between management and neighbours. If the problem is on the shared line, it speeds things up when the management calls us.

### Who deals with the tiling or plaster after a PVC pipe is replaced?

When a wall or floor has been opened, we finish the pipe work and hand over the opened spot ready to be closed up. We talk with you before starting about how the tile or plaster finish will be completed. Because we keep the opened area small, the closing-up work usually stays limited and does not call for renovation.
